Axé Fest: Zumbi Day

November 9, 2024, 1-4:30pm

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed by African warriors enslaved in Brazil and used to fight for their freedom, preserving the lives and cultures of African peoples. Today, we honor this tradition.

Move your body and enjoy the rhythm at Axé Fest, our community day of FREE classes featuring the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira. Classes are open to kids and adults!

This Axe Fest, we honor Brazil's National Day of Zumbi and Black Awareness, which is celebrated on November 20. This holiday commemorates freedom fighter Zumbi dos Palmares, leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, one of the largest communities of Africans who had escaped slavery in Brazil. It also serves to honor the contributions of Black people in the country while raising awareness of racial discrimination and the ongoing fight for equity and liberation.

Schedule:

1-2pm: Kids Capoeira Class

2-3:30pm: Teen & Adult Intro to Capoeira Class plus Roda/Demo

3:30-4:30pm: Afro-Brazilian Dance Class with world-renowned Mestre Gugu of Quilombolas de Luz Capoeira
