Capoeira was developed by African warriors enslaved in Brazil and wielded to fight for their freedom. Today, there is still an urgent need for spaces where people practice a liberating art. At the Capoeira Spot, we empower youth and adults to grow stronger together.
Our mission is to promote the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira in the DC community.
“CapoeiraDC is genuinely invested in the development and physical and mental growth of the children. It's more than just a gym where one would do the work and leave. It's a family. There is love around and it is felt.” - CapoeiraDC parent + student
CapoeiraDC was started in early 2002 by eight students, including Contra Mestre Morcego, Professora Borboleta, Professor Sorriso, and Instrutor Gavião. The eight decided they wanted to train capoeira although they no longer had an instructor.
The first training site for the group was in Morcego’s restaurant on 9th & U St. The students knew they needed higher level instruction. After serious consideration, they approached Mestre Curisco and asked him to lead them in their development. From that moment, they became members of the Capoeira Malês family.
Mestre Curisco, Mestre Lua Branca, and Capoeira Malês schools train the form of capoeira often called capoeira contemporânea.

WHAT IS CAPOEiRA?
martial arts as a form of resistance against enslavement and later forms of oppression. Capoeira arrived in the US during the sixties and has taken root all over the world.
CONTRA MESTRE MORCEGO
Contra Mestre Morcego is the lead teacher at CapoeiraDC. Morcego is the ultimate student. His apellido means “bat” in Portuguese because he was known to stay up late studying. Morcego’s method of study is also his method of instruction; continuous training in order to be constantly prepared for the jogo (game) of capoeira. He is fond of saying, “In capoeira, you’ve got to work a lot to get a little. And you better be happy with a little, because that’s all you’re going to get.”
