ABOUT
US

Our teaching approach has been developed over 20 years. Through it, we create a space where people of all ages and abilities can learn capoeira and constantly grow.

The Capoeira Spot is home to CapoeiraDC, a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to promote the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira in the DC community.

Made in DC.webp

Our vision is to empower the DC community with capoeira's art form of liberation for generations to come. Join us in bringing our vision to reality.

At The Capoeira Spot, we practice these values in our classes and community space:

This is warrior training.

Proper preparation.

Explore creative energies.

Each one teach one.

Nobody gets worse from practice.

We keep capoeira's roots present across our teachings. We preserve capoeira’s history in our practice and use it to advance present-day social justice fighting.

We emphasize safety, proper technique, and constant awareness. We train our strength, agility, reflexes, and strategy to be prepared for all types of games and situations.

We encourage self-expression and creativity through capoeira’s movement, music, and “jogo” (game). We view capoeira as a means for every child and adult to discover and manifest their unique gifts.

Every student is an active contributor to their own development, the growth of their classmates, and the cultivation of our community. We develop students to be role models amongst their peers and actively maintain the positive energy of our space.

We value consistent effort over the long-run. Capoeira isn’t easy! It will challenge you physically and mentally. But as long as you put in the work and come to class with an open mind, you will be able to do things you never thought you could do.

WHAT IS CAPOEIRA?

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art created by African warriors who were enslaved in Brazil during colonial times. The African warriors disguised their martial arts as a dance using music and samba. Capoeira was used to preserve the lives, culture, and traditions of African peoples in Brazil and wielded to resist enslavement and later forms of anti-Black oppression. Capoeira arrived in the U.S. in the 1960s and has taken root all over the world.
